Our first wireless was a wonderful invention; it was called a crystal set and only Dad was allowed to touch it. I can see him now, tinkering with a little piece of wire attached to a holder. In the middle of the set the wire (cat’s whisker) had to touch the crystal just in the right place, and hey presto you got a sound. Of course, you had to wear earphones to hear anything, but, oh, the excitement of hearing Uncle Mac saying, “Hello children everywhere.” We had to take turns listening in, as there was only one pair of earphones and there were four of us waiting to have a go. When we moved, we went all posh and had a battery set.
