The fair came to Stamford every year just before Easter, a tradition dating back a hundred or more years. The town would be at a standstill with most of the streets shut off so that the stalls and various rides could be set up. Janet and I had a great time at the fair that year. We went every night, and whilst it was heavy on the pocket, it was worth every penny. The hit song at the time was Ghost Riders in the Sky by Frankie Lane, and whenever I hear it I can picture those rides on the ‘Cape Walk’ where this song blared out non-stop. Nowadays, I believe that the fair is only about a quarter of the size as new laws and fire regulations dictate that the streets cannot be closed.
