Our childhood ailments were treated with brimstone and treacle, syrup of figs or perhaps camphorated oil which was poured on a rag and taken to bed to help us breathe freely through the night. Bread and milk would soothe sore throats and onion gruel would help to ease a cold. Cod liver oil and malt was given by the spoon, as was Virol for helping us to grow up strong and healthy. A clove was placed in a hollow tooth for that piercing pain of toothache, and warm olive oil was dropped into the ear and a warm scarf tied around the head for earache. As I suffered so much from these last two ailments, I well remember the comfort to be had from these remedies.
