With money in our pockets we would head towards town and the cinema, often stopping at the sweet shop, or maybe the chip shop which sold bags of ‘crackling’ from the fish for just a penny. No thought was given to cholesterol or getting fat – it simply tasted divine. Alternatively, there were the ‘knockings’, the stale day-old buns. These were great value at a bag for a penny.
Once in the cinema we would escape from the real world with such heroes as Roy Rogers and his horse Trigger. Gaby Hayes and the Lone Ranger flashed across the screen while we gasped in awed admiration. Nails bitten to the quick, we sat on the edge of our seats waiting for the next instalment when a card was shown, “… to be continued next week.” We headed back home re-enacting the adventures of our heroes.
